Bethlehem Bread

This recipe is from Isabelle Humaciu, Audrey's "other mother" of LaHabra Heights, California.  Here is the note she includes:

"This recipe was developed from my love of history.  All the ingredients were available during the life time of Jesus in the regions he lived in.  The kids named it Bethlehem Bread."

  ½ cup butter
   1 cup sugar
   2 eggs
   1 teaspoon vanilla
   2 cups flour
   1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup mashed ripe bananas, about 3 bananas
1 cup mandarin oranges (11 ounces, drained)
    1 6-ounce package chocolate chips
    1 cup shredded sweetened coconut
 2/3 cup sliced almonds
   ½ cup chopped maraschino cherries
½ cup chopped figs or dates

Preheat oven to 350°.

Grease two 9" by 5" bread pans.  Sift flour and soda together and reserve.  Cream together butter and sugar.  Add eggs and vanilla.  Beat until fluffy.  Add flour and soda alternately with mashed bananas.  Stir in the remaining ingredients (reserve ½ cup almonds).  Pour into bread pans.  Sprinkle rest of almonds evenly over dough.  Bake at 350 degrees about 1 hour.
