Make sugar syrup with equal parts boiling water and granulated sugar.  Store unused portion in the refrigerator.

Combine the fruit slices, wine and 3 tablespoons sugar syrup in a serving pitcher.  Chill for 1 hour or more.  Stir in brandy and taste.  Add more sugar syrup to taste.    Pour into glasses straight up or over ice.  Garnish with pieces of the slices fruit.  Top off with a splash or two of soda water.
